To highlight the core of our action, Finno Energy is now Finno Exergy.

Finno Exergy was established in 2012 by Timo Erämaa and Heikki J Salminen. They spotted an opportunity for a technology to enable power generation with the electrical efficiency of Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) along with the reliability, the availability, the ability to use several different fuels, and the reduced emissions of gas turbines.

“An existing turbine burns at constant pressure. With detonation, pressure is rising, and the total energy available for the turbine increases. Finno Exergy’s innovation is based on using pulsed deflagration combustion compatible with existing technology, which has yielded significant results. The technology team have successfully harnessed concepts prevalent in ICE combustion and applied them to gas turbines. Effectively the technology is able to harness 80% of the benefits without any of the drawbacks associated with pulse detonation.

Pressure Gain Combustion Technology

The Finno Exergy pressure gain combustion (PGC) process is available for gas turbines in all application areas. Using accurate flow and combustion control, pressure gain of more than 25% has been verified by measurement in our test unit. The simulation driven product development process of pressure gain combustion system is done within the Finno Exergy integrated virtual development environment.

SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY OUT OF A CLEANTECH SOLUTION

The Finno Exergy PGC system is capable of complete burning with low emissions. It can handle a variety of conventional as well as renewable fuels, including alcohol fuels with water content. Freedom of fuel choice as well as high efficiency contribute to an environmentally smart solution. An important part of the development and validation process is a gas generator test unit that has been running since 2015.

INTEGRATED VIRTUAL DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT

Cutting edge 3D-CFD flow and combustion simulation is integrated to full system simulation and optimization by 1D software, used in conjunction with laboratory testing to calibrate models and verify test results. Avant-garde application of powerful engineering tools enabled the technology team to create the most impressive results within a short timeline. Technology team is available to joint development projects with clients.

Finno Exergy Oy has received the “Seal of Excellence” from EU for the application of the project titled: “Pressure Gain System for gas turbines: Most efficient and cost-effective solution to decarbonize power generation and mobility industries” under the call  “Horizon 2020-EIC Accelerator pilot –SME Instrument”.

The Seal of Excellence is a quality label awarded to project proposals submitted to Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation funding program. Projects which were judged to deserve funding but did not get it due to budget limits receive the Seal of Excellence.

The publication with report on measured pressure gain from Finno Exergy’s test unit, Experimental demonstration of a novel deflagration-based pressure gain combustion technology, is now available from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. April 2020

A Finno Exergy paper was accepted to be presented at the AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum 2020. The event shall take place at New Orleans (USA) 22-24 of August (if corona will not cancel the event). The topic of the paper is “Experimental demonstration of a novel deflagration-based pressure gain combustion technology”. November 2019

There is a small but important change in the name of the company. Finno Energy now is Finno Exergy. Exergy is the maximum useful work available from a thermodynamic system. Finno Exergy pressure gain combustion system has been designed to to extract maximum amount of useful energy out of fuel. Exergy is right at the heart of our action. Finno Energy became Finno Exergy in September 2019.

August 2019

On 17-18 August 2019, Finno Energy is presenting a poster at The International Constant Volume and Detonation Combustion Workshop organized by Pressure Gain Combustion Committee. The venue is Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. And on 19-21 August 2019, Finno Energy is attending The AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum in Indianapolis, Indiana.

June 2019

U.S. Department of Energy has published a very interesting technical report about applying pressure gain combustion to combined cycle power generation. The paper states that “PGC technology represents a potential disruptive change in power plant efficiency that is not achievable through standard gas turbine technology”. Finno Energy has made various new simulations of its process in different sizes and gas turbine applications. The results are excellent, and they are proving the flexibility of Finno Energy PGC technology.
